Puttur College offers fee-free admissions to increase enrollment

The Government First Grade College in Jidekallu, Puttur, is working to increase student enrollment by offering free admissions. Currently, only 36 students are enrolled in their BA and BCom programs. To attract more students, the college will waive the fees for the first 100 students in the next academic year, starting in late July. The initiative is supported by donors, as explained by the principal, Prof Subbappa Kaikamba. He mentioned that the college will not manage the funds directly. Instead, students will be matched with donors who will cover their admission fees. Typically, the fee for government colleges is around Rs 5,500 for boys and Rs 4,500 for girls. In addition to free admissions, the college will provide free mid-day meals, thanks to the assistance from the Puttur Traders' Association, which helped acquire necessary cooking equipment. The Rotary Club is also involved in supporting development activities at the college. Next year, the college will launch a new Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) course. They aim to find sponsors for students in this program, as public colleges charge significantly less compared to private institutions. Additionally, the college helps students secure placements in government hostels if needed. The college offers vocational training workshops, and focuses on arts and sports. Training in entrepreneurship, job interview preparation, and traditional crafts is also provided. The institution has facilities including a computer lab, internet access, and a library to support students' learning.
