Puzhal jail experiences death, clash, and suicide attempt

Chennai: On Monday, Puzhal jail experienced a series of dramatic incidents, including a death, a violent clash between inmates, and a suicide attempt. A 72-year-old man, Mannagkatti, also known as Rajamanickam, passed away at Government Stanley Hospital. He had been arrested 10 years ago for allegedly raping a juvenile girl and was still awaiting trial. Mannagkatti suffered from diabetes and mental health issues. After a doctor's examination on March 9, he was admitted to the hospital, where he died on Monday. In another incident, a brawl broke out among foreign inmates at the Special Prison for Women (SPW) in Puzhal. The fight involved a Nigerian woman and a South African national, resulting in injuries for the South African, Fredline Bethmere April. She received medical treatment from prison doctors, and a police case was filed against the Nigerian prisoner. Additionally, a 28-year-old remand prisoner named Ajithkumar attempted suicide by swallowing nails. He was arrested for theft by Elephant Gate police. Ajithkumar reportedly felt depressed because no family members visited him in jail. After prison staff were alerted, he was taken to the prison hospital and later hospitalized. Doctors successfully removed the nails from his stomach, and he is reported to be stable. Puzhal police are currently investigating these incidents.
