Quebec MP meets Vermont senator on trade war issues
A Canadian member of Parliament will meet with a U.S. senator today at the Canada-U.S. border. They will discuss the ongoing trade war between the two countries. Senator Peter Welch, a Democrat from Vermont, is organizing the meeting. The event will include businesses from Quebec and Vermont who are affected by the trade tensions. Liberal MP Marie-Claude Bibeau will represent Canada. Her riding, Compton-Stanstead, shares a border with Vermont. Recently, some U.S. states have begun to challenge President Trump's trade policies. For example, Colorado's governor, Jared Polis, recently highlighted the positive relationship his state has with Canada. The trade conflict escalated last week when the U.S. imposed a 25 percent tariff on all steel and aluminum imports. In response, Canada announced it would expand its own tariffs on American goods.
