Quebec seeks more control over appointing its judges
Quebec's National Assembly unanimously voted Wednesday to seek greater control over the appointment of judges to the province's Superior Court and Court of Appeal. The motion, introduced by Quebec's Minister of Justice, aims to negotiate with Ottawa to amend the Constitution, granting Quebec the power to select judges from the Quebec Bar. This follows concerns over delays in federal appointments. The move comes amidst a federal election campaign, with the Liberal Party of Canada already opposing the request, citing the importance of judicial independence.
