Rahul Gandhi denied Lok Sabha speaking rights after Modi
The Lok Sabha was chaotic on Tuesday when Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition, was denied permission to speak after Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Maha Kumbh. This led to loud protests from the opposition, prompting Speaker Om Birla to adjourn the session. The uproar began after Modi's statement, which was made without prior notice. Opposition members were upset, questioning how the Prime Minister could speak first without allowing time for their comments. Once Modi left, Speaker Birla explained that the Prime Minister spoke under Rule 372, which allows ministers to discuss matters of public importance. However, he noted that this rule does not permit the opposition to ask questions on such statements. As protests continued, the Speaker was forced to pause the proceedings. Afterward, Gandhi spoke to reporters. He expressed his support for Modi's comments about Kumbh but said the Prime Minister should have honored the victims of a recent stampede at the event. Gandhi sarcastically noted that the Leader of the Opposition ought to have the chance to raise important issues, commenting, "...but this is New India."
