Rai detained three days before official arrest, inspector testifies
In the Sheena Bora murder trial, a retired police inspector testified about the timeline of the accused Shyamvar Rai’s arrest. The inspector, who worked at the Khar police station, stated that Rai was picked up three days before he was officially arrested on August 21, 2015. Rai was initially detained in a case related to the Arms Act. The retired inspector admitted he did not know where Rai was held between his pickup on August 19 and his official arrest. He acknowledged that the law requires an immediate First Information Report (FIR) for Arms Act arrests but could not explain the delay in Rai’s case. During cross-examination, the inspector rejected the defense's claim that it was common practice to arrest someone for a minor offense to gather information on a larger crime. He firmly denied that he acted on behalf of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or any of his former superiors. The hearing continues as the legal proceedings unfold.
