The University of Mysore is planning to build a rainwater harvesting facility at its Manasagangotri campus. The project, led by the Department of Studies in Earth Science, aims to collect rainwater and improve the campus's water supply. The facility will include a recharge well to capture rainwater that currently runs off the campus. The university has noted that the rooftop area measures 1,881 square meters, and the region receives about 800 mm of rain annually. This means they could potentially collect over 1.2 million liters of rainwater each year. In addition to replenishing groundwater, the project offers a chance for research into the local geology. The estimated cost for the facility is around ₹25 lakh. A borewell will also be installed to evaluate the quality of the water collected. Currently, there are 12 borewells on campus, but only eight are operational due to low groundwater levels. The new facility is expected to help restore the existing borewells. University officials believe this initiative will be beneficial given the high student population on campus.
