Rajasthan Police to implement women's safety helpline model

Rajasthan Police is planning to implement a new system for women's safety, inspired by Uttar Pradesh's 1090 Women Power Line. This decision follows a visit by Rajasthan Police officials to Uttar Pradesh to learn about the successful WPL 1090 model. The high-level team included key officials such as Deputy Commissioner Devendra Kumar Bishnoi. They studied how the WPL 1090 operates, including its counselling services and police units. They were particularly impressed by how well the service is integrated with UP Dial 112, which helps in responding quickly to emergencies. From January 1 to March 16, 2025, UP's 1090 service reported over 93,000 complaints, with an impressive resolution rate of 82.05%. In just over two months, the service received 439,000 calls, averaging about 5,860 calls each day. Last year, the service resolved nearly all of over 458,000 complaints, establishing its effectiveness. Rajasthan Police plans to introduce several features from the 1090 model. These include a dedicated helpline for women, specialized counselling units for emotional support, cyber units to handle online harassment, and collaboration with emergency response services for quick police action. ADG Padmaja Chauhan emphasized the importance of the 1090 model in helping women feel safe and supported. She expressed hope that Rajasthan's adoption of this initiative will enhance the safety of women in the state and reflect a growing commitment to combating gender-based crimes in India.
