Ramanathapuram police recover ₹5 lakh from cyber fraud
Police in Ramanathapuram have recovered ₹5 lakh that a young man lost to cyber fraud. The money was returned to 30-year-old Pasupathi from Ilamanur, who fell victim to a scam while browsing social media. In February, Pasupathi saw a post on Instagram promoting high returns on cryptocurrency investments. Interested, he contacted the account for more information. The scammers convinced him to deposit an initial investment of ₹5 lakh into a private bank account. After making the payment, Pasupathi did not hear back from the scammers. He tried to reach them through the provided mobile number but received no response. Realizing he had been scammed, he filed a complaint with the local cybercrime police. The police managed to trace the bank account used in the scam, leading them to a suspect in Chennai. They found that this person was only a middleman who received the money and forwarded it. The police seized the ₹5 lakh from him but noted that he was not aware of the larger scam. Investigations to track down the main perpetrators are ongoing.
