Rare jock itch cases linked to sexual activity reported in New York
A rare fungal infection known as jock itch has been reported in New York, with four cases identified since June. The fungus, Trichophyton mentagrophytes genotype VII, causes itchy rashes in the genital area and is linked to sexual activity. All reported cases involve cisgender men aged 30-39, with some having recent sexual contact with each other. The CDC has raised awareness among dermatologists about the potential for this infection to spread through sexual contact. Treatment typically involves antifungal medications, which may take weeks or months to fully resolve the infection. Medical attention is advised if symptoms worsen or do not improve with over-the-counter treatments.
