Ravenna man pleads not guilty in Cleveland cold case
A man from Ravenna, Ohio, has denied charges related to a rape case from 1995. Edmund Scott, 54, pleaded not guilty to kidnapping and sexual assault during a court hearing on Tuesday. Scott was arrested last week after advanced DNA analysis identified him as a suspect in the cold case. He appeared in court by video link from jail. The judge set his bond at $50,000 and said he must wear a GPS monitor if released. He was also ordered to take an HIV test. The incident occurred on November 13, 1995. Prosecutors say Scott attacked a 28-year-old woman while she was walking in Cleveland. After some conversation, he assaulted her and then fled the scene. A passerby helped the shaken victim home, and she later called 911. A sexual assault kit was collected, but the DNA did not lead to any suspects at the time. In 2015, the case was presented to a grand jury, which issued an indictment under the name "John Doe #100" to protect against the statute of limitations expiring. Recent advanced DNA analysis links the profile to Scott. Scott’s case is now assigned to a public defender. A pretrial hearing is set for March 21.
