RBI reduces risks in unsecured loans through measures

economictimes.indiatimes.com

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has successfully reduced risks in unsecured loans by increasing risk weights in November 2023. This led to a significant slowdown in the growth of credit card dues and loans to non-bank lenders. Credit card dues growth fell from 34% in November 2023 to 13% in January 2025. Loans to non-bank lenders also decreased from 21.5% to 7.7% during the same period. The RBI plans to restore original risk weights for bank loans to non-banking financial companies starting in FY26, following the moderation in these credit categories.
