Rebecca Kelly Slaughter calls her firing "absolutely illegal."
Rebecca Kelly Slaughter, a member of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), was recently fired by former President Donald Trump. She called her termination “absolutely illegal” and said she was not given any reason for it. Slaughter emphasized that her firing is not just about her job but about the principle of fair legal enforcement. In an interview with CNN, Slaughter expressed concerns that commissioners should not fear losing their jobs for not supporting the President's allies. She stated that her role was important for bringing transparency and accountability to the FTC, which is supposed to be an independent agency. Without her voice and that of other minority commissioners, the public may not be informed about the agency’s behind-the-scenes decisions. The firings of Slaughter and another Democratic commissioner have raised questions about the president's power to terminate officials in independent agencies. A Supreme Court ruling from 90 years ago indicates that such officials can only be fired for valid reasons. However, the White House defended the firings, claiming Trump had the authority to make those changes. Slaughter also highlighted ongoing legal actions against major tech companies like Facebook, now called Meta. She criticized a past FTC settlement that she felt was too lenient, arguing it was more of a "slap on the wrist" than a true penalty. Slaughter plans to contest her firing and suggests her case could possibly go to the Supreme Court. She is determined to make her voice heard in this matter.
