Rebels prepare to govern Syria after Assad regime's fall, raising hopes and concerns
The fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria presents both opportunities and risks, according to U.S. President Joe Biden. Various rebel groups, backed by different international powers, now control parts of the country, raising concerns about potential conflict over power-sharing. Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) has emerged as a key player following the regime's collapse. The group's leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, previously known as Abu Mohammed al-Jawlani, is attempting to reshape HTS's image to gain legitimacy and support for a new governance structure. Syria's Prime Minister, Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali, has stated he will work with the rebels for a smooth transition of government functions. The treatment of al-Jalali will indicate whether HTS leaders are committed to establishing a stable and inclusive government.
