Record high temperatures challenge SSLC students in Karwar
In Karwar and Uttara Kannada, temperatures have reached 41.5°C, presenting serious challenges for SSLC students taking their exams. This is the first time in over sixty years that temperatures have exceeded 40°C in many parts of the district. Students must endure these extreme conditions at their exam centers, which often lack basic facilities like fans or air coolers. Many students travel 25-30 kilometers to reach their centers, only to find themselves working in sweltering environments. Schools with concrete roofs are particularly uncomfortable, while others with traditional Mangalore tile roofs offer little relief from the heat. Parents are worried about their children’s health and have called on the authorities to provide medical staff near exam centers. They are concerned about risks such as dehydration and heat-related illnesses. A local teacher noted that while the district usually performs well in SSLC results, this year’s extreme weather may negatively impact students' performance. The district administration has issued a warning about the exceptionally high temperatures. They have highlighted the risks of heatwaves and related health problems, which can include heatstroke, dizziness, fatigue, and even serious conditions like stroke. Officials are advising the public to take precautions against these dangerously high temperatures.
