"Red Rooms" explores true crime fascination and culture
"Red Rooms" is a new film that premiered at the Red Lorry Film Festival. Director Pascal Plante and actress Juliette Gariépy shared their thoughts about the movie in an interview. They discussed their excitement about the film reaching audiences in different cultures, including India. Pascal expressed joy that their Quebecois film continues to gain recognition. He noted that it has taken a long time since filming began in 2022. He believes the film resonates with people around the world, especially as it explores themes related to internet culture. Juliette added that having the film viewed by Indian audiences is thrilling. She highlighted the significance of India being one of the biggest film markets globally and found it fascinating to see how viewers there might react to the movie. The idea behind "Red Rooms" initially came from a desire to understand people who admire criminals. Pascal explained that he was influenced by true crime documentaries and wanted to focus on the fans of killers, rather than just the criminals themselves. While casting, Pascal found Juliette to be a strong choice early on. He mentioned that it was challenging to find someone to play the Clementine character, who needed to be annoying yet endearing. Juliette described her excitement about portraying a more complex female role, which deviated from the usual characters she is cast as. In preparing for her audition, Juliette read the entire script and reflected on her character’s background and motivations. She appreciated Pascal’s method of sharing the whole script with actors, as it made them feel involved and serious about their roles. Both Pascal and Juliette emphasized the importance of understanding the characters deeply and engaging in meaningful conversations during the casting process. They wanted the actors to bring their insights and creativity to the film, creating a richer narrative experience.
