Red Sox ace Crochet unlikely to receive extension soon
Garrett Crochet, the top pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, had a strong spring training. He struck out nine batters in his final game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, finishing with a 0.73 ERA in the Grapefruit League. Crochet’s performance includes a total of 30 strikeouts over 15 and 2/3 innings. The Red Sox had hoped to secure a contract extension for Crochet before the season starts on Opening Day. However, a source indicated that reaching an agreement is unlikely. There is a significant gap between what the team and Crochet want. The pitcher himself noted that he is focused on the upcoming season rather than contract talks. Crochet has only two years of team control left. If no extension is signed, he could consider free agency as it approaches in 2026-2027. Sam Kennedy, the team president, acknowledged that the decision will ultimately depend on whether Crochet sees a future in Boston. Despite the contract situation, the Red Sox are pleased with how Crochet has performed this spring. Manager Alex Cora confirmed that he is ready for the season opener. The team had made a substantial trade to acquire him in December, giving up four promising prospects in the process.
