Red Sox option Vaughn Grissom to minor leagues
The Boston Red Sox made significant roster cuts during their spring training on Wednesday. They released five players, including Vaughn Grissom, who was sent to the minor leagues. Grissom, a former prospect acquired from the Braves, was competing for the starting second base position. He faced competition from Kristian Campbell, David Hamilton, and Marcelo Mayer. Campbell is currently seen as the leading candidate for the job, while Mayer also showed promise during a game against the Tigers. Last season, Grissom struggled with injuries and performance. He played only 31 games for the Red Sox and had a disappointing batting average of .176 this spring, which contributed to his reassignment. The other players cut from the roster include right-handed relievers Luis Guerrero and Josh Winckowski, both of whom are expected to join Grissom at Triple-A Worcester. Guerrero started strong in spring training but had issues with control later on. Winckowski, who pitched frequently for the Red Sox last season, also experienced difficulties and allowed multiple runs in his outings.
