Red-tagging leads campaign violations in the Philippines election
Red-tagging has emerged as the most reported campaign violation in the Philippines for the May 12 elections, according to watchdogs VoteReportPH and Kontradaya. Of 94 recorded violations, 60 cases, or 63.8%, involved Red-tagging. Illegal campaigning ranked second, accounting for 24.5% of violations. This includes improper campaign materials and postings outside designated areas. Other violations included vote-buying and misuse of public resources. The Commission on Elections (Comelec) plans to investigate these reports. Under new rules, labeling individuals or groups as terrorists without evidence is considered an election offense.
