Reed and Garcia compete in Macau for Open spots
Patrick Reed, Sergio Garcia, and 15 other players from LIV Golf are competing in Macau this weekend. They are not in it for the prize money but to earn a spot in the Open Championship. The event is part of the Asian Tour’s International Series and offers three spots for the Open to the top finishers who are not already qualified. Garcia emphasized the significance of this tournament. He said it is important for players to qualify for majors, especially since the Open is his favorite. Reed also noted that any chance to qualify for a major gives players extra motivation to perform their best. As of Saturday's third round, Reed and Carlos Ortiz are leading the tournament at 16 under par. Jason Kokrak is in third place at 13 under, while Garcia is six strokes behind Reed. Last year, both Reed and Garcia missed some of the major tournaments, and they are eager to qualify this time. The R&A has a new exemption for the top LIV player in the individual rankings who has not already qualified. Currently, Garcia sits third in those rankings and is a strong contender for this exempt spot, but he needs to maintain good performances to secure it. A strong showing in Macau could significantly improve Garcia's chances of playing in the Open again. He aims to climb the ranks and secure one of the remaining spots available through this tournament.
