Reedley brothers sentenced for vineyard coworker's death
Two brothers, Victor and Vincent Cerna, were sentenced to prison for their involvement in the death of a 19-year-old farmworker, Jose Varela, in Fresno County. Varela was a father and husband, working in a vineyard when an argument broke out between him and the brothers nearly four years ago. The dispute escalated, leading to gunfire that took Varela's life. In a courtroom filled with emotion, Varela's family expressed their pain and sorrow. His wife, Alyssa, and cousin, Ana, spoke about how he was just an ordinary worker whose life was cut short unfairly. Judge Geoffrey Wilson noted that the brothers had tried to escape justice by fleeing to Mexico but were eventually brought back to face charges. Victor Cerna pleaded no contest to murder, while Vincent Cerna pleaded no contest to attempted murder. Victor apologized to Varela's family, stating that no one deserves to lose a loved one. Despite the apology, Varela's family said they expected severe consequences for the brothers' actions. Victor was sentenced to 25 years to life, and Vincent received a sentence of 9 years. As part of their plea agreement, they waived their right to appeal. Varela's family, especially his young daughter who was born after his death, continues to grieve their loss. The judge expressed hope that the sentences would bring some closure to the family.
