Remake of "The Wedding Banquet" features queer couples

A new version of the romantic comedy The Wedding Banquet is coming to theaters. This remake is based on Ang Lee's 1993 film and is directed by Andrew Ahn. The original film was a hit and received an Oscar nomination. The cast features Bowen Yang, Kelly Marie Tran, Lily Gladstone, and newcomer Han Gi-chan. The story is set in Seattle and focuses on two same-sex couples. Angela and Lee, played by Tran and Gladstone, want to have a baby but face challenges with expensive IVF treatments. Another couple, Min and Chris, have their own issues. Min, from a wealthy Korean family, is about to lose his student visa. He proposes to Chris, but Chris is not ready for commitment and says no. In a surprising twist, Min offers to help Angela and Lee with their IVF costs in exchange for a green card marriage. Bowen Yang, who stars in the film, noted that a lot has changed in the lives of queer people since the original film was released 32 years ago. The filmmakers hope this new version will connect with today's audiences.
