Remote infections nearly double surgical site infection risk
A recent study found that ongoing remote infections during hospital stays nearly double the risk of surgical site infections in patients undergoing intracranial neurosurgery. The research analyzed 800 patient records from a university hospital. Surgical site infections occurred in 6.9% of cases, with most infections linked to tumor resections. The study noted that remote infections significantly increased the risk, while factors like body mass index and insulin therapy did not. The study highlights the need for careful consideration of remote infections in neurosurgical patients. It was published on March 7, 2025, in the Journal of Hospital Infection.
