Zakir Hussain, the renowned tabla maestro, passed away at 73 in a San Francisco hospital after battling chronic lung disease. He had been hospitalized for two weeks before his death. Hussain gained international fame starting with his first concert in the U.S. at age 11. He collaborated with global artists, including John McLaughlin and Yo-Yo Ma, blending Indian classical music with other genres. He won multiple Grammy Awards and received the National Heritage Fellowship in 1999. In 2016, he became the first Indian musician invited to the White House by Barack Obama for a special concert.
