Report finds Gaza has highest journalist death toll in a century
Summary: A report from the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) reveals that at least 128 journalists have been killed in Gaza, Israel, and Lebanon since October 7, 2023. This number surpasses the total journalist deaths during World War II and marks a record high for conflict zones in the last century.
The CPJ confirmed that 123 Palestinian journalists were among the dead, along with two Israeli and three Lebanese journalists. The report indicates that over three-quarters of the 99 journalists killed in 2023 died during the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
Investigations suggest that some journalists were directly targeted by Israeli forces. Eyewitness accounts and UN experts have raised concerns about the safety of journalists in the region, as Israel has restricted foreign media access since the conflict began.
