Republicans increasingly back government investment in children
More Republicans are now supporting government investment in children. This shift shows that both major political parties agree that American families are struggling and need help. Traditionally, Democrats have focused on government programs to support families. However, many Republicans now believe in this too. While their ideas on how to help differ, both sides believe changes are necessary. Recent polls reveal that majorities from both parties support family-friendly policies, like paid leave, affordable childcare, and tax credits for parents. A recent study by Common Sense Media found that 73% of Democrats, 65% of independents, and 55% of Republicans feel the government does not spend enough on children’s programs. Analysts say it is significant that even a slight majority of Republicans are advocating for government spending on children. This shows an acknowledgment of the hardships faced by American families, especially those in the working class. Most parents surveyed believe that conditions for families like theirs are only fair or poor. In another survey of teenagers aged 12 to 17, only 4% said conditions were excellent for their families. Kristen Soltis Anderson, a Republican polling expert, stated she is not surprised by this change, especially among Republican women who feel that the current situation is inadequate.
