Republicans oppose renaming Nashville airport after Trump
Republicans in Tennessee voted against a bill to rename Nashville International Airport after former President Donald Trump. The House Transportation Committee rejected the proposal with a vote of 12 to 5, with one member voting present. The bill had previously faced issues due to its estimated cost of $10.3 million. Rep. Todd Warner, who sponsored the bill, argued that renaming the airport would honor Trump’s contributions to America. He described Trump as a "true patriot" who inspired many Americans and challenged the status quo. Warner emphasized that this was not just about a new name but about recognizing Trump's impact. Despite expressing respect for Trump, many Republicans opposed the bill. They raised concerns about the funding. They noted that the money intended for the airport was already committed to other expansion projects. Transportation Committee Chair Dan Howell added that the airport's current name honors a World War I hero and former federal administrator, Col. Harry S. Berry. Some committee members also questioned whether Trump would actually want his name on the airport. Rep. Pat Marsh stated that he felt Nashville was not significant enough for Trump’s name and mentioned that larger cities should have that honor.
