Researchers map health effects of GLP-1 receptor agonists in new study

Researchers have created an atlas detailing the health effects of GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs), commonly used for type 2 diabetes and obesity. The study analyzed data from 2.4 million participants, revealing both benefits and risks associated with these medications. The findings show that GLP-1RAs can lower the risk of various health issues, including respiratory and psychiatric conditions. However, they also increase the risk of gastrointestinal and musculoskeletal problems, such as abdominal pain and gastroesophageal reflux disease. This study is the first to systematically map the efficacy and risks of GLP-1RAs compared to other diabetes treatments. It highlights previously unreported benefits and side effects, providing valuable insights for clinical care and future research.
