Residents in Rainham protest landfill fires affecting health
Residents in Rainham have raised concerns about continuous fires at the Arnold's Field landfill site, claiming it is negatively affecting their health. The local community is calling for action from both the landowner and the council. The landowner, Mr. O'Donovan, said he purchased the site with the intention of improving the area. He wants to build on the land but is waiting for planning permission. He believes the site should be removed from the green belt designation. The council has stated that it has not received a formal planning application from Mr. O'Donovan. Meanwhile, local group Clear the Air in Havering is demanding accountability from the council regarding the situation. Ms. Kettle-Frisby, a member of the group, described the ongoing issue as a crisis. She is particularly worried about the health effects of the fumes from the landfill fires, especially on children and people with pre-existing health conditions. "Children in deprived areas deserve clean air just like anyone else," she emphasized. The group has taken legal action to push for change and has raised funds through crowdfunding. "I really hope we are listened to," Ms. Kettle-Frisby stated, expressing her hope for a resolution.
