Residents protest garbage station on graveyard land
Residents in Peelamedu, Coimbatore, are opposing the construction of a new garbage transfer station. They claim that the Coimbatore Corporation is building it on land that was originally set aside for a graveyard. On Monday, the residents submitted a petition to the District Collector. They are asking for an immediate stop to the construction. The land in question is located on Vilankurichi Road in Ward 26 and covers seven acres. Currently, a transfer station has been operating on three acres since 2002, and a crematorium is situated on two acres. The petitioners argue that the construction of another transfer station on the remaining two acres would take away space needed for burials. They also express concerns about foul odors from the garbage and the crematorium, stating that these are already unbearable. The nearby primary health center, water tank, and night shelter could also be affected. Residents are urging local authorities to rethink this decision and find alternative land for the garbage facility.
