Indonesian actor Reza Rahadian is making his directorial debut with a new film titled “Pangku” (On Your Lap). The film is set during Indonesia’s economic crisis in 1998 and tells the story of Sartika, a pregnant woman seeking a better life for her child. Sartika moves to Pantura, a region on Java's North Coast, where she meets Maya. Maya runs a coffee shop and initially helps Sartika but later persuades her to work as a “Kopi Pangku” waitress. This job involves women sitting on men’s laps while they drink coffee. Sartika's life changes when she meets Hadi, a truck driver, and falls in love. Rahadian described the film as a deep and personal look at a mother's strength, inspired by his own mother. He wants it to be a tribute to all mothers who face challenges yet continue to persevere. The production has a budget of $875,000 and is seeking more funds for post-production. The film is currently in production, with 85% of its financing already secured. Rahadian has a successful acting career, having appeared in over 70 films and won five prestigious Citra Awards. He has also directed short films and a miniseries in the past. Producers Arya Ibrahim and Gita Fara are bringing their extensive experience to the project. Ibrahim has held leadership roles in the Indonesian Film Festival, while Fara has produced internationally recognized films. They aim to complete “Pangku” this year and hope for a premiere at film festivals, followed by a theatrical release in Indonesia by late 2025. The film will explore themes of resilience and the struggles of women in society.
