Rich nations struggle to commit to climate finance at COP29 in Baku
At COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, leaders discussed the urgent need for trillions in climate finance to meet global warming targets. However, developed countries failed to reach a consensus on a new funding goal, highlighting a breakdown in multilateral cooperation. The conference aimed to address the financial responsibilities of wealthier nations, which are historically responsible for most emissions. Developing countries have called for $1.3 trillion annually until 2030, primarily in grants, but negotiations stalled. Instead of committing to this funding, developed nations suggested that emerging economies like China and India should also contribute. This shift in responsibility has drawn criticism, as it diverts attention from the obligations of the wealthier countries.
