Ring of fire solar eclipse begins over Easter Island and South America
A partial solar eclipse, known as an annular or "ring of fire" eclipse, began on October 2, 2024, over Easter Island and parts of South America. The moon's shadow is creating a visible ring as it moves across the Pacific. The peak phase of the eclipse will occur from 3:03 to 3:09 p.m. EDT, with about 93% of the sun covered. Unlike the total solar eclipse in April, this event will not completely block the sun's light. The path of annularity crosses Easter Island and parts of Chile and Argentina, affecting an estimated 175,000 people. Viewers must use solar eclipse glasses or filters to safely observe the event.
