Rio Tinto report reveals rise in bullying and sexual assault allegations linked to diversity programs
A recent report on Rio Tinto's workplace culture shows an increase in bullying and sexual assault allegations. Eight cases of rape or attempted rape were reported in the past year, up from five in 2021. Bullying complaints rose to 39%, with women experiencing the largest increase. The report, led by former Australian sex discrimination commissioner Elizabeth Broderick, indicates that some bullying is a backlash against the company's diversity initiatives. Many men feel overlooked due to these programs, leading to resistance and negative behavior. Rio Tinto's leadership acknowledged the troubling findings and reported a significant rise in employee terminations related to these issues. Despite the challenges, some employees noted improvements in workplace culture, with two-thirds expressing confidence in future changes.
