Rising stars struggle to find diverse roles in Hollywood
Hollywood has seen a new generation of stars like Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, and Florence Pugh rise to fame. These actors are praised for their talent, but they face challenges in finding the right roles that showcase their abilities. Veteran director Steven Soderbergh shared his views on this topic while promoting his upcoming film, Black Bag. Soderbergh pointed out that many productions today focus on large franchise films or low-budget horror movies. Mid-budget films aimed at adult audiences are becoming rare. This shift makes it harder for young actors to find diverse roles that highlight their skills. Soderbergh noted that while superhero and horror films have their appeal, there are fewer options for middle-ground films that allow actors to truly shine. Despite these challenges, Chalamet, Zendaya, and Pugh have secured roles that fit their strengths. For example, Chalamet recently played Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, while Zendaya received acclaim for her performance in Challengers. Both stars also took on production roles, indicating that actors are increasingly involved in creating the projects they want to work on. Other rising stars like Austin Butler and Anya Taylor-Joy have also found success in various upcoming films. However, Soderbergh's observations remain significant, highlighting the need for more varied opportunities for new talent in the industry.
