Rocky Flats Refuge offers nature walks and wildlife viewing
Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuge has transitioned from a nuclear weapons production site to a wildlife haven since its shutdown in 1992. The area was cleaned up, and the refuge was established in 2001, although some parts remain closed due to safety concerns. In 2018, trails through the former security buffer zone were opened after being deemed safe. However, the center remains a superfund site, and opinions vary on the safety of recreational activities in the area. Recently, hikers explored the 1.4-mile Walnut Creek Loop, enjoying views of the mountains and wildlife. While they noted a lack of animal sightings this year, the refuge is home to many plant and animal species, including the rare Preble’s meadow jumping mouse.
