Romanian man charged for Walmart skimming scheme in Pennsylvania
A Romanian man linked to organized crime has been charged for installing skimming devices at a Walmart store in Pennsylvania. The charges were announced on Thursday. Florin Doroiman, 34, reportedly placed two skimmers at the Wilkes-Barre Township Walmart last December. Police say he is part of a criminal group that has stolen thousands of account numbers, including more than 1,000 from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The skimming devices were found at registers 11 and 12 on December 5. Loss prevention officers discovered them and informed the police on December 18. The devices were capable of capturing credit and debit card information and had Bluetooth technology to transfer data remotely. Investigators revealed that over 100 people had their SNAP benefits drained during this time. The case progressed when the U.S. Secret Service in Virginia noticed a police press release about the skimmers and matched Doroiman’s photo to footage from the Walmart. Doroiman was arrested last week in Lynchburg, Virginia, where he allegedly installed similar devices. He remains in custody in Virginia and will be extradited to Pennsylvania once his local legal matters are dealt with.
