Romania's Social Democrats lead parliamentary elections with strong mainstream support
Romania's ruling Social Democrat party (PSD) is set to win the most votes in the parliamentary elections, with 22.6% of the vote counted. The far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) follows with 18.2%, while the National Liberal party (PNL) has 14.4%. Despite a significant far-right presence, mainstream parties received about 70% of the votes. This outcome contrasts with earlier predictions of a strong far-right shift after the first round of the presidential election on November 24. The PSD will meet to discuss coalition negotiations, which may take weeks due to a fragmented parliament. The presidential runoff between PSD's candidate and USR's Elena Lasconi is scheduled for December 8, pending a court ruling on potential electoral fraud.
