Rory McIlroy wins Players Championship, boosts confidence for majors
Rory McIlroy has opened up about his nerves after winning the Players Championship. He feels relieved and hopeful as he prepares for major tournaments in the future. The 35-year-old golfer overcame anxiety to win the tournament against JJ Spaun in a tense three-hole playoff. This victory is his second Players Championship title and his 28th win on the PGA Tour. McIlroy expressed that he felt extremely nervous, especially during a crucial tee shot on the 16th hole. He emphasized how important it was to handle those nerves as he looks ahead to upcoming events. McIlroy has experienced disappointment in recent majors, including the US Open and the Irish Open in 2024. He hasn’t won a major since 2014. However, after recent successes, including a victory at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February, he believes he is ready to tackle the challenges ahead. With the Masters tournament approaching in April, McIlroy is feeling more confident. He aims to finally win at Augusta and secure his fifth major title. To prepare, he has chosen to compete in The Houston Open starting March 27. This will give him a final opportunity to get ready before the Masters begins.
