Rotorua hui discusses supercritical geothermal energy solutions
About $12 million to $15 million has already been spent to investigate supercritical geothermal technology. This method could help provide more affordable energy and improve energy security in New Zealand. The New Zealand Government has set aside $60 million to further explore this technology. Minister Shane Jones is leading discussions on this topic at a hui in Rotorua. He will meet with local iwi from the Taupō Volcanic Zone to talk about the potential of this natural resource, which is described as abundant but underutilized. Jones emphasized the international interest in New Zealand's advancements in this area. He believes that if successful, supercritical geothermal technology could significantly lower energy costs and enhance energy security in the country.
