Royals release Ross Stripling and Luke Maile
The Kansas City Royals have released right-handed pitcher Ross Stripling and catcher Luke Maile. Both players chose to opt out of their contracts with the team. In addition to this news, the Royals announced that right-hander Carlos Hernández was claimed off waivers by the Philadelphia Phillies. First baseman Nick Pratto and outfielder Nelson Velazquez cleared waivers and were assigned to Triple-A Omaha. Ross Stripling, 35, had a tough season last year with the Oakland Athletics, finishing with a record of 2-11 and a 6.01 ERA. He has played for several teams including the Dodgers, Blue Jays, and Giants during his career. Luke Maile, 34, struggled as well, hitting .178 with two home runs for the Cincinnati Reds last season. Overall, he has a career batting average of .208 with 21 home runs in 440 games across his time with multiple teams, including Tampa Bay and Toronto.
