Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leader Dattatreya Hosabale spoke out about the historical figure Dara Shikoh during a recent press conference. Dara Shikoh was the eldest son of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. He is known for his efforts to promote understanding between different religions in India. Hosabale criticized those who advocate for the "Ganga-Jamuni culture," which encourages harmony between cultures. He pointed out that these supporters do not recognize Dara Shikoh as a hero. He questioned why historical figures who opposed Indian values are celebrated. He referenced the renaming of Aurangzeb Road in Delhi to Abdul Kalam Road as an example of this. Dara Shikoh sought to connect Hindu and Islamic beliefs and walked a different path than his brother, Aurangzeb. Shikoh was declared Crown Prince in 1655 but lost a power struggle to Aurangzeb in 1657 and was assassinated in 1659. His writings aimed to merge the two religions and included translations of Hindu texts into Persian. Hosabale also discussed India’s history of resistance, contrasting fights against British colonizers with those against earlier rulers. He stated that freedom movements can vary greatly depending on who is being fought against. His comments come amid tensions following recent clashes in Nagpur, where disputes over Aurangzeb’s grave led to a curfew that has since been lifted.
