RTE honors jockey Michael O'Sullivan's lasting impact
During a recent episode of the Late Late Show, jockeys Paul Townend and Rachael Blackmore honored the memory of their fellow jockey, Michael O'Sullivan. Michael, who was 24, tragically passed away last month after a fall at Thurles racetrack. Townend shared how winning the Supreme Novices' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival this year held special meaning, as the race was dedicated to O'Sullivan. He emphasized that the loss of Michael resonated deeply with everyone in the racing community. "Anyone that was lucky enough to meet Michael left with a lasting memory," he said. As he crossed the finish line, Townend wore an armband with the Cork crest in honor of Michael. He expressed gratitude for being able to win in Michael’s name, noting how significant that moment was for him personally. Blackmore added to the sentiment, acknowledging the devastating effect of Michael's death on his family, community, and friends. She highlighted the passion that all jockeys share, saying they often do not consider the inherent risks of the sport. Blackmore concluded by reflecting on Michael’s extraordinary talent, stating, "Michael was the furthest thing from mediocre."
