Rural Tasmanian women unite supportively against cancer
In rural Tasmania, some women are banding together to fight cancer while dealing with the challenges of isolation. They have formed strong connections both online and in person to support one another. Anita Campbell, a farmer from Bothwell, was shocked when she received a breast cancer diagnosis after a routine mammogram in July 2022. She underwent various treatments, including surgery and chemotherapy, which required long trips to the city. Despite the exhaustion, she tried to stay positive. During her treatment, Campbell discovered a close friend, Melissa Fergusson, was also battling breast cancer. Both women, along with another friend, became each other's support system. They shared their fears and celebrated small victories together. Fergusson had to pause her farming work while also managing her treatment. The two women often met in the city and leaned on each other, sharing tips and encouragement. Their friendships grew deeper, especially after Campbell’s mother lost her fight with cancer. Both women emphasize the importance of regular mammograms and health checks. Campbell urges all women, regardless of where they live, to prioritize their health. They have found comfort in their shared experiences, forming bonds that are valuable during tough times.
