Russia launches new hypersonic ballistic missile in response to Ukraine strikes
Russia has launched a new experimental hypersonic ballistic missile, the Oreshnik, against Ukraine. President Vladimir Putin stated this was a response to Ukrainian strikes using Western missiles. The missile was reportedly used in an attack on Dnipro. The U.S. Pentagon confirmed the missile is an intermediate-range weapon, not an intercontinental ballistic missile. It can potentially be modified to carry nuclear warheads. Russia claims the missile successfully hit its targets and is now in service. The missile is said to travel at speeds over Mach 10 and can carry multiple warheads. Russia notified the U.S. about the launch 30 minutes prior, although it was not technically required to do so.
