Russia thrives on conflict, complicating peace negotiations

A senior adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that Russia can only thrive in a state of war. Mykhaylo Podolyak made these comments as peace negotiations aimed at ending the Ukrainian invasion continue. He warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin gains from prolonging the conflict. Podolyak urged both the United States and the European Union to take stronger actions against Russia. He mentioned that Ukraine has agreed to a temporary ceasefire with the U.S. to stop attacks on energy infrastructure. However, strikes have continued, and Ukrainian leaders do not believe a long-term peace agreement is likely. Podolyak emphasized that negotiating with Russia is challenging. He stated, “If you agree to something today, the price tomorrow will be higher.” He warned that Russia seeks to create chaos and dominate global relations. To effectively counter Russia, he called for more decisive action from Europe and more significant sanctions against Moscow. Upcoming talks are scheduled between U.S. and Ukrainian officials. Tensions have recently increased between the Biden administration and Ukraine, raising concerns about diplomatic relations. A recent statement from the White House sparked controversy when it suggested that the U.S. could manage Ukraine’s nuclear power plants. Despite the ceasefire agreement, Russia has continued military operations, launching attacks while Ukraine retaliated with strikes. Podolyak insisted that Ukraine's territorial integrity must remain a priority and noted that all occupied areas will eventually be reclaimed. He also pointed out the growing Russian influence in Europe, alleging that Moscow seeks to strengthen its relationships with individuals in various countries. Podolyak stressed that the threat posed by Russia is not merely a political issue, hearing that it could impact broader global stability. Regarding military operations, Podolyak defended Ukraine’s recent offensive actions and mentioned the ongoing resource challenges faced by his country. He believes that the outcome of the conflict would be different if there was equal parity in resources. As Podolyak spoke, he highlighted the difference between the leadership styles of Trump and Putin, suggesting that Putin's approach is irrational and aggressive. He concluded by hinting that Ukraine's ultimate goal for 2025 is to bring an end to the conflict.
