Rutgers defeats Army, advances in WNIT tournament
Rutgers University women's basketball team won against Army, 71-60, in the second round of the WNIT at Jersey Mike's Arena. This victory keeps their postseason hopes alive. They will now wait to face either Howard or Charleston in the next round. Coach Coquese Washington noted the team has been focused and prepared since they were eliminated from the Big Ten tournament 18 days ago. Rutgers received a first-round bye, while Army advanced after a close win over Bryant. JoJo Lacey led the Scarlet Knights with 17 points and four assists. Four players scored in double digits. Awa Sidibe made all six of her shots, finishing with 13 points. Freshman Zachara Perkins also added 13 points, and Destiny Adams recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Rutgers entered the WNIT with an 11-19 overall record and had a tough season in the Big Ten, finishing 3-15. Freshman Kiyomi McMiller, who last played on February 6, did not participate in this game. This is Rutgers’ third appearance in the WNIT. They have a strong tournament record of 8-1 and won the championship in 2014. In past years, they have faced ups and downs, including a second-round loss in 2016 and a declined bid in 2018.
