Salford Red Devils face financial struggles without takeover
Salford Red Devils are facing significant financial challenges, with reports indicating that without a recent takeover, the club could have folded. Chief Executive Chris Irwin stressed that the situation is better than the alternative of going out of business. Since a consortium led by Dario Berta took charge, Salford has dealt with delayed payments and worries about its future. Some players, including Marc Sneyd, have already left for other clubs, while others may follow. Irwin mentioned that three to four players were pressured by their agents not to play, but they all decided to participate in recent matches. The club is currently managing a debt crisis, with repayments costing around £20,000 weekly. Irwin described the ongoing financial stress as an "absolute nightmare," but he believes the players' commitment to the team remains strong despite the uncertainties. Salford recently advanced in the Challenge Cup and has upcoming matches against Huddersfield. They are hopeful for significant funding, possibly around £7 million, through negotiations with the city council related to their stadium and surrounding land. Irwin confirmed that they will likely remain under a financial sustainability cap for a few more weeks. He highlighted that investor interest is primarily about land development opportunities, rather than a focus on rugby league itself.
