Samantha Harvey wins 2024 Booker Prize for space-themed novel "Orbital"
Samantha Harvey won the 2024 Booker Prize for her novel "Orbital," which follows six astronauts reflecting on Earth from the International Space Station. At 136 pages, it is the second-shortest novel to win the award and the first set in space. This marks the first Booker win for a woman since Margaret Atwood in 2019. Harvey dedicated her prize to those advocating for the Earth and human dignity. The award includes a cash prize of £50,000 ($64,000). The shortlist featured a record five women, including Rachel Kushner and Anne Michaels. The Booker Prize recognizes outstanding fiction published in the UK or Ireland, with this year's eligible works released between October 2023 and September 2024.
