Sambhal cancels fair over communal tensions and objections

Sambhal, a district in Uttar Pradesh, has become a focal point of controversy as local authorities have denied permission for the Neja Mela, an annual fair held to honor Syed Salar Masud Ghazi. The ban follows concerns raised by members of the Hindu community and aims to maintain public order. The district administration, led by Additional Superintendent of Police Shirish Chandra, condemned the celebration of an "invader," labeling it an "evil tradition." Officials even sealed the traditional site for the fair, reinforcing their decision. Attempts to rename the event to “Sadbhavna Mela” to promote harmony were rejected by the organizing committee. They emphasize celebrating Maharaja Suheldev, a historical figure who defeated Salar Masud in the 11th century, portraying him as a national hero.
